From 1601, non-future craftsmen in parts of Altona enjoyed special religious and commercial freedoms. This area, known as "Freiheit", gave rise to the legendary streets "Große Freiheit" and "Kleine Freiheit" in Hamburg's St Pauli district as early as the 17th century. In keeping with this historical tradition, a special homage to the city of Hamburg has been created in the form of a unique gin.

In addition to Tuscan juniper, caraway, aniseed, fennel, dill and lemons were macerated to give the gin a distinctive and unmistakable flavour. Five special types of pepper were also extracted as part of an elaborate filtration process and then carefully distilled. As the crowning glory, the gin matured for a "sinful" night in old aquavit oak barrels before being bottled in the characteristic Gin Sul bottle, which is reminiscent of traditional apothecary bottles.
