The Fuji Gotemba distillery, which began production in November 1973, was founded as a joint venture between Kirin, Seagram and Chivas Brothers. While the distillery produces both malt and grain whisky, all stages of whisky production - from fermentation to bottling - take place on site. After Kirin took full control in 2002 following the dissolution of Seagram and renamed the distillery Kirin Distillery, they began to focus more on their connection to Mount Fuji, leading to the launch of their first single malt in 2004.

Kirin Fuji Whiskey is a high quality grain whiskey with a remarkable variety of flavours and an interesting evolution of taste. It offers good value for money and has received a positive response from consumers looking for an affordable Japanese whisky.

According to the guidelines set by the Japan Spirits and Liqueur Makers Association in February 2021, this whisky fulfils the requirements to be considered a true Japanese whisky. This means that the entire production process - from fermentation to distillation and bottling - has taken place in Japan.
