VAT 69 is a blended Scotch whisky that holds its own in the ranks of well-known brands such as Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Grant's Whisky and Ballantine's. Produced in Edinburgh, VAT 69 combines the long tradition of Scotch whisky production with the qualitative consistency of modern distillation. Sanderson has been producing this whisky, which is bottled in port, alongside other spirits since 1863.

The creation of VAT 69 is based on an extensive selection process in which William Sanders and his son developed numerous blends. The final selected blend, which came from cask number 69, impressed with its balanced and strong flavour and was established as the basis for the VAT 69 brand. The name is derived from the cask number and the distillation process, with "VAT" referring to the English word for mixing vessel.

Bottling of the whisky only began in 1880, after William Mark Sanders was able to convince his father to market the whisky beyond cask sales. This innovation was a significant development in the whisky industry. The choice of a port wine bottle for bottling VAT 69 offered practical advantages and contributed to the unique presentation of the product.
