Mortlach Distillery, founded in 1823, is one of the oldest and most renowned distilleries in Scotland's Speyside region. Known as "The Beast of Dufftown", Mortlach has made a name for itself with its uniquely complex and powerful single malts. The distillery uses an unusual 2.81-fold distillation process, which gives the whiskies their characteristic depth and complexity.

In 2018, Mortlach introduced the Dufftown trio, consisting of a 12-, 16- and 20-year-old whisky. The 12-year-old Mortlach is distilled in the "Wee Witchie" stills and matures in a mixture of ex-sherry casks made from European oak and ex-bourbon casks made from American oak. The number 2.81 on the label refers to Mortlach's special distillation process, in which the whisky is distilled 2.81 times. This process, also known as "The Way", uses six stills, with a fifth of the distillate being distilled a third time in the small "Wee Witchie" still.
