Tequila FAQs

The most important basics about Tequila at a glance.

How do you recognize good tequila?

Tequila can be a special treat, whether enjoyed neat or in cocktails. When you buy tequila, you'll quickly notice that its aroma differs significantly from other spirits such as vodka, gin, or rum. Tequila is produced only in specific regions of Mexico. If you want to buy a high-quality tequila, you can usually recognize it by its balanced and mild taste.

The spirit is based on the blue agave, the proportion and maturity of which play a decisive role. After distillation, clear or "silver" tequila is bottled directly, while golden varieties undergo an additional maturation period. Some varieties are aged in barrels for an extended period, developing additional flavors before being sold. The quality of a tequila therefore depends, among other things, on its maturation. Key criteria here are particularly taste and aroma.

The color can also provide clues, as a clear tequila has generally not been aged for long. If you buy a silver tequila, it is particularly suitable as a base for cocktails, while aged and darker varieties are often enjoyed neat.

In addition to taste, smell also plays an important role. If you have the opportunity when buying tequila, it is advisable to pay attention to the aroma. A high-quality tequila has a pleasant agave scent, often accompanied by a slightly salty note. It does not smell sharp or pungent, but rather balanced and inviting. The quality of the raw materials used, which developed during production, can also be recognized by the smell.

Furthermore, high-quality tequilas are characterized by a greater variety of aromas that develop during maturation. Depending on the variety, fruity or even slightly woody nuances can be perceived. Ultimately, however, the assessment remains subjective and depends heavily on personal taste. Buying tequila is therefore always an individual decision.

The Classifications of Tequila

When buying tequila, a fundamental distinction is made between different quality levels. For simpler varieties, at least 51% of the sugar used must come from the blue agave. High-quality tequilas, on the other hand, are made entirely from blue agave and are characterized by a particularly intense aroma. This distinction significantly influences the quality and taste of the tequila.

In addition, tequilas are divided into different categories depending on their aging period. Blanco or Silver Tequila is bottled directly after distillation and impresses with a fresh and clear character. Gold or Joven Tequila is usually a blend of young and aged varieties and has a slightly more intense aroma. Reposado Tequila matures for at least two months in oak barrels, developing softer and more complex flavor notes. Añejo Tequila is aged for one to three years and is characterized by a particularly balanced and aromatic profile. Extra Añejo Tequila is aged for several years and impresses with its depth and complexity.

In most cases, the alcohol content of tequila is between 38 and 50%. However, deviations are possible. Milder varieties often have a lower alcohol content, while more aged varieties with a higher alcohol content offer a more intense taste experience.

Finding the best tequila

Which variety is considered the best cannot be answered generally, as this strongly depends on individual taste. Nevertheless, taste and smell play a central role in the evaluation. However, some factors can help with the selection. For example, a well-known brand can be an indication of consistent quality. In addition, tequilas from Mexico are generally considered to be of particularly high quality, for example from brands like Sierra. The composition also provides important clues. When buying tequila, you should make sure that it contains as few additives as possible and that the proportion of blue agave is as high as possible. These factors directly affect quality and taste.

The most well-known tequila brands

Among the most well-known tequila brands are 1800 José Cuervo, which is considered one of the oldest registered brands, and Don Julio Tequila, which is valued for its particularly balanced and complex aromas. Padre Azul has secured a firm place in the premium segment with its high-quality and strikingly designed bottles, as well as intense flavor profiles. Olmeca Tequila is also among the popular brands and offers a wide selection of different varieties for various tastes and occasions. Overall, the product range of these brands extends from classic Blanco and Reposado variants to longer-aged Añejo Tequilas.

Buy the most popular high-proof tequila

The Sierra Tequila Milenario Fumado has an alcohol content of 41.5% and is made from 100% agave. This high-quality spirit is available in a 0.7-liter bottle in our online shop. During production, the tequila is gently double-distilled and then matures for about three years in stone oak barrels before being bottled. The Sierra Milenario Extra Añejo impresses with a fresh and at the same time fruity aroma profile, which is characterized by the mineral-rich soils of volcanic origin. Discover this characterful tequila and enjoy it neat.

How much does tequila cost?

Tequila is available in various quality and price categories. If you're looking to buy an affordable tequila, you'll find options in the lower price segment. These are particularly well-suited for cocktails. Gold tequilas are usually a bit more expensive and can also be enjoyed neat. They often offer a more balanced and complex aroma. In the mid-price segment, the differences in taste, scent, and color become more apparent. High-quality tequilas generally contain no additives and impress with a more pleasant and balanced aroma. Additionally, there are exclusive variants in the upper price segment. These are often limited and produced only in small quantities, making them particularly sought after by collectors. In addition to tequila, our range also includes other spirits such as rum or liqueurs. Whether bold flavors or sweeter variants, there's a suitable selection for every taste.

Drinking Tequila Correctly: Traditions and Rituals

Tequila is far more than a classic party drink and is consumed worldwide in various, sometimes traditional ways. When buying tequila, you will find the right variety for every drinking ritual:

  • With salt and lemon – This well-known method is one of the classics. The back of the hand is moistened and sprinkled with salt, then the salt is licked off, the tequila is drunk as a shot, and then a slice of lemon is bitten into. This ritual can mitigate the sharpness and bring out the flavors better.
  • Mexico: The "Bandera" – In this traditional variant, three glasses are served, consisting of lime juice, tequila, and Sangrita. The colors are reminiscent of the Mexican flag. It is drunk in a specific order, creating an interplay of acidity, spice, and agave flavors.
  • With coffee beans – This way of enjoying tequila is particularly common in Sweden. Tequila is served here with one or two coffee beans, which are lightly chewed. The bitter substances of the beans complement the taste of the tequila and provide a more intense aroma.
  • With tomato juice or Sangrita – In Mexico, tequila is often combined with Sangrita, a spicy and slightly hot tomato-based drink. This combination enhances the flavors of the tequila and provides a particularly intense taste experience.

Regardless of whether you want to enjoy tequila neat, as a shot, or as part of one of these international rituals, when buying tequila, you will find the right selection for every occasion and taste.

What's the bottom line on buying tequila?

Tequila can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails and is characterized by its distinctive flavor. The spirit originates from specific regions of Mexico and is made from the blue Weber agave. Different quality levels and styles arise depending on the proportion and processing.

An important factor here is maturation: while unaged varieties tend to be fresh and clear, aged tequilas develop softer and more complex aromas through storage in oak barrels. These differences shape both the taste and the overall enjoyment experience.
