Planteray Rum BARBADOS 5 Years Old is a 5-year-old blended rum from Barbados, produced at the historic West Indies Rum Distillery. The raw material is sugar cane molasses, which is first fermented for three to four days. A distinctive feature is the combination of two distillation methods: distillates from the Twin Column Still and the Old Gregg’s Pot Still are used in the blend. In this way, Planteray combines different distillation characteristics to create a well-balanced Barbados rum. Another key feature is Planteray’s characteristic ‘double ageing’, which combines tropical and continental cask maturation.


The first stage of maturation takes place for three years in Barbados in ex-bourbon casks. The rum is then sent to France, where it undergoes a further two years of continental maturation in Ferrand casks. This results in a total maturation period of five years under varying climatic conditions. The producer also specifies 160 g/hl AA of volatile components and a dosage of 16 g/l. At 40 per cent in the 0.7-litre bottle, the Planteray Barbados 5 Years embodies the combination of molasses, pot-still and column-still distillates, as well as two-stage cask maturation in Barbados and France. This combination makes it a versatile example of the traditional Barbados rum style.
