The most popular gin producers
In addition to the selection of botanicals, well-known gin brands with their own recipes contribute significantly to a special taste experience. Each brand relies on an individual composition, shaping the diversity of the gin world. Below you will find some well-known brands that have significantly influenced the development of gin:
- Tanqueray Gin: A classic gin with a distinctive juniper note, produced since the 19th century. Complemented by subtle citrus aromas and delicate spice, Tanqueray is particularly well-suited for classic cocktails and a balanced Gin & Tonic.
- Monkey 47: This gin from the Black Forest impresses with its special recipe featuring a total of 47 botanicals, including regional ingredients like cranberries and blackberries. Its complex and intense aroma makes it an exciting choice for creative drinks.
- Hendrick's Gin: This Scottish gin stands out with unusual ingredients such as cucumber and rose petals. These give it a floral freshness and a slight sweetness, appealing especially to those looking for a unique taste.
- Malfy Gin: Inspired by the Italian coast, this gin brings fresh and vibrant citrus aromas to the glass. Variants with lemon or pink grapefruit provide a refreshing taste experience and are excellent for light cocktails.
Discover various types of gin
When buying gin, you'll discover a wide variety of different gin types, each with its own character and appeal. It's worth getting to know the various styles to find the gin that best suits your personal taste.
London Dry Gin
London Dry Gin
The most well-known variation is London Dry Gin, also called London Gin. Despite its name, it doesn't necessarily have to be produced in London, but must meet certain specifications. These include a minimum alcohol content of 37.5% by volume, an alcohol base of plant origin, and the exclusive use of natural ingredients that are added simultaneously. The result is a dry and clear gin, where juniper is the focus, and which is particularly well suited for classic cocktails such as Gin & Tonic.
Dry Gin
Dry Gin
Dry Gin or Distilled Gin, in contrast, offers more leeway in production. Here, too, only natural or nature-identical flavors are permitted, but the ingredients do not have to be added simultaneously. This freedom leads to a wide range of taste profiles, which is particularly appreciated by connoisseurs who enjoy experimenting.
Sloe Gin
Sloe Gin
Sloe gin is, strictly speaking, not a classic gin according to EU regulations, but a liqueur. This is due to its alcohol content of less than 37.5 percent by volume and its production by steeping sloe berries in distilled gin. Its fruity, sweet taste makes it ideal for mixed drinks or pure enjoyment.
New Western Dry Gin
New Western Dry Gin
This modern style deliberately places juniper in the background, highlighting other botanicals instead. Floral or fruity notes are often prominent. This creates a lot of room for creative interpretations and new flavors.
Aged Gin
Aged Gin
Also known as Reserve Gin, this variant is aged in wooden barrels. The maturation process gives the gin additional complexity and a slightly golden color. Typical aromas include vanilla, caramel, and spices, reminiscent of aged spirits.
Compound Gin
Compound Gin
In this production method, the botanicals are steeped directly in neutral alcohol without subsequent distillation. This process is comparatively simple and cost-effective, but often leads to less complex flavors.
Plymouth Gin
Plymouth Gin
This is a geographically protected gin variety, produced exclusively in Plymouth, England. Plymouth Gin is known for its somewhat softer and earthier taste, distinguishing it from classic London Dry Gin.
Flavored Gin
Flavored Gin
Flavoured Gins are enhanced with additional aromas such as berries, citrus fruits or spices. This creates a wide variety of flavours that are particularly suitable for creative cocktails.

Non-alcoholic distillates as a conscious alternative to gin
Alcohol-free distillates offer an ideal option for anyone who wants to experience the typical taste of gin but without alcohol. This category is gaining increasing importance and appeals to health-conscious individuals as well as people who do not consume alcohol for personal or religious reasons.
The production is similar to classic gin. Here, too, selected botanicals are used to create the characteristic aromas. In this way, well-known flavors such as juniper, citrus fruits, or herbs can be enjoyed even without alcohol.
Buying Gin - The Conclusion
Gin is far more than just a spirit; it represents a versatile enjoyment experience. Its long history and wide range of aromas make it an integral part of today's cocktail culture. From classic drinks like the Gin and Tonic to creative mixed drinks, gin offers numerous possibilities for different tastes and styles.
Gin owes its characteristic flavour primarily to the so-called botanicals, with juniper always taking centre stage. Depending on the composition, a wide variety of aromas emerge – from fresh and citrusy to spicy or floral.
