Gusano Rojo Mezcal with a worm is a traditional Mexican agave spirit from Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s most important mezcal-producing regions. It is made from the Espadín agave, which is one of the varieties most commonly used for mezcal. Its most striking feature can be found right inside the bottle: the ‘Gusano’ (red worm) that gives it its name – which, strictly speaking, is not actually a worm but an agave larva. This unusual addition has been closely associated with certain mezcal bottlings for decades and has contributed significantly to Gusano Rojo’s high recognition value. With an alcohol content of 38 per cent, this bottling is comparatively mild and approachable.


Numerous stories and legends have grown up around this mezcal with a gusano. According to one tradition, the larva was once even regarded as a kind of indicator of quality: if it remained intact in the spirit, this was interpreted as a sign of its quality. Today, it is primarily symbolic in nature and is an unmistakable part of the presentation of Gusano Rojo mezcal. Tradition also has it that whoever takes the last sip from the bottle also consumes the larva. The combination of Espadín agave, its Oaxaca origin and the Gusano in the bottle makes this 0.7-litre bottle a particularly striking example of Mexican mezcal culture.
