Pastis 51 Pastis de Marseille 45% ABV 0.7 l is a classic pastis hailing from the sunny region around Marseille. This aniseed-flavoured spirit, which is very popular in France as an aperitif, offers the authentic flavour of Provence and reflects the tradition of Provençal spirits. Pastis 51 is made from a carefully selected blend of aniseed and other herbs, which give it its characteristic, intense flavour. With an alcohol content of 45% vol., it is full-bodied yet harmonious in flavour and really comes into its own when diluted with cold water.
The ‘louche’ effect?
A milky cloudiness when water is added – known as the ‘louche’ effect – is caused by the essential oil anethole.
The addition of water releases the oils previously enveloped by the alcohol, causing the drink to become cloudy.
