Don Papa Gayuma Rum is a limited-edition release from the Philippines which, thanks to an extraordinary cask concept, carves out a distinctive style within the Don Papa range. The name ‘Gayuma’ means ‘love potion’ and draws on mystical traditions and shamanic rituals centred around Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros. To produce this spirit, it is first matured for three years in ex-bourbon casks, followed by a two-stage finish. First, it spends a further six months in heavily toasted Rioja wine casks. This is followed by an additional three-month maturation in oak casks that previously contained smoky Islay malt whisky. It is precisely this combination that sets Gayuma apart from classic Don Papa releases.


Through a series of consecutive cask stages, Don Papa Gayuma combines the brand’s tropical origins with influences from American oak, Spanish wine casks and Scottish Islay casks. In particular, the final Islay malt cask finish adds an unusual smoky note to the profile, without Gayuma losing its identity as a rum. This limited edition is bottled at 40 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with a gift box. The elaborately designed presentation reflects the mystical inspiration behind the name and makes the bottling appealing to collectors too. With its bourbon cask maturation, Rioja cask finish and Islay malt cask finish, Don Papa Gayuma is aimed particularly at connoisseurs seeking unusual cask combinations and smoky rum bottlings.
