Description
Description
The Tomintoul distillery, located in the Scottish Highland Park in the Cairngorms National Park and named after the nearby village of Tomintoul, opened its doors in 1964 and is now owned by Angus Dundee Distillers.
At 370 metres above sea level, Tomintoul is the second highest distillery in Scotland, surpassed only by Braeval Distillery, which was founded in 1973. Although the majority of the 3.2 million litres of alcohol produced each year is exported to the United States for blends, Tomintoul continues to bring special single cask bottlings to the market.
The name of this single malt whisky is no coincidence, as "Tlàth" is Scottish Gaelic and means "gentle" or "mild". Tomintoul's motto is to produce a particularly soft and gentle whisky, as described on the packaging of Tomintoul whiskies as "gentle dram".
The basic ingredients of this single malt whisky are malted barley and water, whereby it gently unfolds its flavours on the palate without smoke. With an alcohol content of a rather restrained 40% by volume, it offers a light character that is particularly suitable for beginners. The whisky is matured in bourbon barrels, which give it its special flavour.
