Averna Amaro Siciliano bitter liqueur, a Sicilian speciality, has its roots in the early 19th century. Originally developed by Benedictine monks from the Santo Spirito monastery in Palermo, the recipe was passed on to the textile merchant Salvatore Averna in 1868. This marked the beginning of its commercial production.

Averna is made from a carefully selected blend of 33 Mediterranean fruits, herbs, flowers and spices. The ingredients include pomegranates, gentian root, cinnamon and liquorice, all complemented by essential oils from bitter oranges and lemons. The production of the liqueur begins with the crushing of the botanicals, which are then macerated in pure alcohol. After this phase, the extract is mixed with sugar and water to achieve the optimum drinking strength.

Today, Amaro Averna is the best-selling amaro in Italy and is internationally recognised for its rich, deep flavour and aromatic complexity.
