The Ron Zacapa Centenario ETIQUETA NEGRA 23 Años – Old Edition is an older bottling from Zacapa in Guatemala, which is now rarely found. With a higher alcohol content of 43% in the 0.7-litre bottle, the Etiqueta Negra also differs significantly from classic Zacapa bottlings with a lower alcohol content. Instead of ordinary molasses rum, the production process uses what is known as ‘Virgin Sugar Cane Honey’, a concentrated sugar cane juice. Maturation takes place in the Guatemalan highlands at an altitude of around 2,300 metres, where the comparatively cool climate promotes the slow development of the distillates. The number 23 does not refer to the uniform age of the entire contents, but relates to the Solera system and the rums of varying ages used within it.


Zacapa Etiqueta Negra 23 Old Edition utilises the Solera system, which is characteristic of the brand. Distillates of varying ages are combined and passed through different types of casks. The darker and more robust Etiqueta Negra was conceived as a particularly intense interpretation of the Zacapa style and emphasises the influence of cask maturation more strongly. It is precisely the combination of the Guatemalan highland climate, Virgin Sugar Cane Honey, the Solera process and 43% ABV that makes this older Zacapa bottling an interesting rarity for connoisseurs and collectors today.
